The cloud is great. Stop the hype.

Cloud computing isn’t new, though I’m sure you’ve heard more about it in the last few months than you did previously. The cloud is an amazing thing, but one that is poorly understood. I believe this lack of understanding stems from technology confusion which is trumpeted by corporations that have identified “the cloud” as a medium for expansion and profit. Don’t get me wrong, the cloud is useful — but I hear some of the dumbest reasons why.

Before I launch my rant, I’ll qualify that SaaS existed before “the cloud,” yet in many defintions (like the link above) it is considered a cloud service. I consider the cloud to be only the infrastructure because the software and the platform has been provided by a third-party successfully before the term “cloud” arrived. It isn’t fair to legitimize your concept by repackaging two successfully proven technologies under your brand.

Three Google Voice + Wave Invites – uncompiled.com Wallpaper Competition

Having been a GrandCentral account holder before the acquisition of their company by Google, I’ve had a Google Voice account from day one. Having used it sparingly when needed, I hadn’t recently logged in much. Having done so in the past few days I noticed that I had three invitations to give out. That said, I’d like to make it a pseudo-promotion for uncompiled.com to give these away for some creativity on the part of site visitors.

The best three wallpaper submissions by Friday night (9PM EDT) will receive Google Voice invites. To make it sweeter, I currently have a Google Wave account, but no invites. When I do, I will also send those same three people Wave invites if they need them. No time-line for that can be given by me, but that’s my commitment.

Please include at least the site name in the wallpaper and potentially the slogan “Technology News That You Need” if it works out. Multiple submissions are allowed from one person. Please submit a few different resolutions if possible. Also, by submitting your work you are giving me the right to post and display your submission on the site.

Submissions can be presented in the comments if you can host the images somewhere or e-mailed directly to me. Have fun and be creative.
